Bagamoyo

Bagamoyo is significantly important for its enriching, fascinating and inspiring historical, cultural, architectural and religious heritage.

Situated at 70 kms North of Dar es Salaam City on the coast of the Indian Ocean, Bagamoyo is locally, nationally and internationaly known for several reasons, namely:

  • First sea port and meeting point of the Arabic and African cultures

  • Ivory and slave trade terminus

  • Zanzibar´s gate to the mainland by missionaries, explorers, traders

  • Spread of Kiswahili language and culture

  • First schools, first hospital, first post-office

  • Early settlement at Kaole (12.-17. century)

  • Centre of two world religions: Islam and Christianity

Bagamoyo is an attractive tourist centre and future world heritage site.
